BIG WRECK, "Russians," 2022

Toronto's Big Wreck has released a cover of Sting's insightful and compassionate Cold War commentary "Russians," with proceeds going to the UNHCR, the United Nation Refugee Agency aiding the people fleeing the Ukraine. The rock band, led by Ian Thorney, recorded the 1985 song in early January and planned to release it later this year, never imagining its relevance the following month. "We have an opportunity to help," the band posted on Facebook. "By downloading, sharing, and donating, you’re providing much needed resources to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. The time is now, to help the millions seeking refuge from the ongoing attacks on Ukraine." You can buy the download here. — Karen Bliss

Hardcore Beatles fans are familiar with the many bootleg versions of “Get Back,” and its lyrical evolution, originally addressing the anti-immigration stance of British MP Enoch Powell, as well as similar views in America. In the highly touted new documentary, Get Back, we see Paul McCartney improvising many of these lyrics — including “we don’t need Pakistanis” and “don’t need no Puerto Ricans living in the USA.” Director Peter Jackson flashes the screen with newspaper headlines of the day, and makes it clear "Get Back" was conceived as a protest song, denouncing white nationalism.
